System Hacks for Noob's 3 : Save your Storage Space while using Virtualization

SAVE HARD DISK SPACE USED IS SYSTEM VIRTUALIZATION COMPACTING DISK

We as Computer Engineers make use of  Virtual Systems in our Daily Life , Organizations using VM Ware, Virtual Box,Hyper-visor and a lot more VM Environments .

These all use your hard disk space to manage the Virtual Machine(VM) as if any one of you had made a note that when we configure a VM its size is in between 10-20 GB only but with passage of time as we use that VM its size increases rapidly and if ignored as such it may acquire all your hard disk space and then you are left with only one option to reformat the drive .This is an accountable loss according to today's scenario.

Why This Happens So?

While configuring VM's we need to configure maximum hard disk space for a system. In that configuring we are assigning a share of Hard Disk memory to act as single independent Virtual Hard Disk for VM. So, now when we use VM and perform various tasks then that space expands but when your turn VM off  then its tendency is not to restore and compact it self .So, as much as we use it it starts expanding and expanding.

What to do with this Problem?

Now coming to the solution of this problem. We can avoid this wastage of storage space using a feature in which we can free up amount of memory which has been acquired by VM but had not been used .

To do some do follow these steps:

STEP 1:
Firstly let's see before performing cleanup what it our Disk Size . As my virtual machine is located in G Drive(Shown in Fig :1).So lets see how much free space i am having in my G Drive. As we can see 42.2 GB is free according to Fig:2. In this demo i am using VM Ware Workstation.

STEP 2:
In VM configuration menu click on Hard Disk SCSI as shown in Fig:3.

STEP 3:
You will be prompted with a menu and in that you need to click on Compact button as shown in Fig:4 then compacting will start an a more prompt will open with progress bar as shown in Fig:5.Wait for some time it will take time according to the free space available.

STEP 4:
Once completed , a success message will be displayed on your screen then Click on OK and all your tasks are done(Fig:6).Now go back to your My Computer section and notice how much space you saved ,in my case it was in G Drive and in starting free space available to me was 42.2 GB and now after this complete process free space available to me is 49.1 GB as shown in Fig:7.

You should repeat this process weekly with all your VM's ,for optimum utility of space do this after every use as it will take less time and enhance your machines performance.
